Welcome to Robert Matheson Fine Art
I am a Plein Aire Painter living in Minneapolis, Minnesota.Minnesota is a great palce to paint as it has variety in subject matter as well as four seasons to utilize.I paint from life,No camera,Alla prima.Much the same as the French Impressionists and Dutch, setting up my easel and painting the scene as I see it.With the exception of a couple workshops I am self taught. This has allowed me to acquire my own unique style.I enjoy the challendge of color and value[ the light and dark]I use both brush and knife to get the texture I want and use a split primary pallete for paints[2 of each primary color a warm and a cool]I have studied the great landscape painters and have found inspiration and knowledge from looking at their work.Levitan,Sargent,Corot,Monstad and many others have helped guide my journey. I have spent several years painting alongside Robert Bonawitz who studied with the Great Richard Lack.He has been a great mentor and a good friend as well.My Greatest teacher has and will be Mother Nature. She always tests me and some times taunt me with the beauty she displays!
Be it a creek that the light hits it just so or a field that intrigues me in its design,or the texture of the scene, the way the building sits just so. It is all these elements at work that attract me want to try and capture the uniqueness to that particular spot.I paint in a direct way without a camera. Usually completing the painting on site in one go.I put my Heart and Soul into each painting feeling spent when finished knowing that in the future the painting maybe all that remains of the scene.I paint from nature year round, the seasons offer such Beauty that it is imperative for me to paint them all. From the subtle hints of color in snow to the bold showy colors of Fall. My objective is to find places that when first viewed one feels a sense of calm and sense of "Being there". I strive to put on canvas the form, color and light, all of the things that come together to inspire me to paint a particular scene. I Hope you enjoy my work as much as I have had creating it.
